N-scale Blue Ridge Division
I constructed the layout by making 48" high half walls using 2"x4" framing lumber. I then screwed "1x4" pieces of lumber across the walls to form a "T". I then added a "1x4" piece of lumber to the front of the "T" to make a facia for the front side of the layout.
This method of construction provides a nice clean uncluttered look around the layout. There are also no legs in the way as people walk around the layout. I carpeted the floor using carpet tiles and trimmed out the room with moulding.
I used risers to support 1 1/2" thick foam panels to form the sub roadbed. I then used cork roadbed and Micro Engineering Track throughout the layout. The mountains are 6' tall, which provide a great view block and are constructed from the same 1 1/2" foam panels covered with brown paper towels dipped in plaster and draped over the foam.
The many thousands of trees are made from twigs covered wth poly fiber and different shades of green ground foam. I painted the facia flat black to make the layout stand out like a stage at the theatre.
